Vertigo is a common condition characterized by a spinning or rotating sensation even though you are
not moving.

A special type of vertigo is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and is responsible
for up to 35% of all reported cases of vertigo.

BPPV can be caused by allergies, flu-like episodes, ear infection or a blow to the head.

The technique is called
Epley's Maneuver.

Mis-placed calcium crystals in the inner ear are re-positioned by the physical therapist's maneuvers.

The video on the
next page is a physical therapy home exercise technique (Brandt-Daroff) and is
recommended for occasional and mild cases of BPPV.

Epley's maneuver may have to be done one or more times by your physical therapist.

Other conditions may mimic BPPV - your physical therapist will refer you to the appropriate
professional if you don't feel immediate and sustained relief from dizziness and vertigo.

Some doctors or physical therapists will use special video goggles to measure
uncontrollable eye movements called
rotational nystagmus - these eye movements are
characteristic of a special type of vertigo called
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Most physical therapists will not use video goggles because the rotational eye movements are
visible without goggles.

Treatment is also possible without the goggles.  The goggles are for measurement and recording
purposes only (see the video).

You need a doctor or a physical therapist to perform an
Epley's maneuver.
This is the Dix-Hallpike Test which shows the posterior semi-circular canal in
the right ear is the source of the mal-positioned 'ear crystals'.  Your physical
therapist will perform this test to determine which ear is causing your problem.

Physical Therapists can help you with type of vertigo with a 95% success rate
using a simple painless technique.
You should feel significant and immediate relief from the spinning and the
dizziness - there are no harmful side effects.
This is the Semont procedure which shows the misplaced calcium carbonate
crystals are in the lateral semicircular canal - this is the second most common
variant (~14%) of BPPV and is treated differently.
