This exercise, called shoulder external rotation in sidelying position is the
bread-and-butter of any physical therapist treating shoulder patients.
Rotator cuff strengthening is very important for two groups of people:

  • Throwing athletes, swimmers, overhead workers such as painters and...

  • Anyone over 50 years of age!

Because of the simplicity and the safety of these exercise interventions everyone with
shoulder pain should try
at least this one exercise before considering cortisone shots or
surgery for shoulder pain.

What if my Magnetic Resonance image (MRI) has already diagnosed a rotator
cuff tear?

Even if you have a diagnosed tear still try this exercise.  Many people have partial tears
that respond well to the strengthening exercise.

Your physical therapist may have other techniques to help alleviate your pain.

When not to exercise.  Stop exercising if the shoulder pain is...

  • at night
  • made worse with exercise
  • swells or becomes hot and inflammed
  • accompanied by shortness of breath, facial pain, slurred speech or vision
This video of shoulder surgery, called arthroscopic surgery by the orthopedic
surgeon, is quick and comprehensive.

For those who really need it - for whom physical therapy has failed to
demonstrate a benefit - shoulder surgery these days is safe and effective

- just don't make shoulder surgery your first choice.
