What is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy is the study and treatment of movement problems that may cause or be caused by
pain.
Injured, stiff and weak body parts are often the cause of painful movement problems.
Typical diagnoses treated include the following:
- rotator cuff injuries
- shoulder tendinitis
- spinal stenosis
- sciatica
- low back or lumbar injuries
- neck injuries
- tennis elbow and golfers' elbow
- carpal tunnel syndrome
- ankle sprains
- runners' knee
- hip trochanteric bursitis
- bulging or herniated discs
- Vertigo and BPPV
- headache
- Runners' and golfers' injuries
For many of these conditions, your physical therapist might prescribe exercises. Some of the specific
exercises are described in the videos on these pages.
Before prescribing an exercise, your physical therapist must complete the evaluation - she must
determine what exactly is the matter with the movement of your body - your spine, your arms, your legs
and your neck and head.
The evaluation consists of a series of precise measurements, palpation, history-taking (asking
questions) and problem solving.
The end result is the Physical Therapy Diagnosis.
Once you have the diagnosis you and your therapist will set your goals - what do you want from physical
therapy? Do you want to run a marathon? Or, do you just want to be able to play with your
grandchildren?
Once you have your goals you and your physical therapist can plan your interventions: massage,
exercise, stretching, traction... the list goes on.
You should find out how long your therapist expects your recovery to take.
Once you know your physical therapy diagnosis you will understand why you hurt.
The physical therapy diagnosis helps your therapist design your rehabilitation program.
If home exercises are a part of your rehabilitation plan then we can help you.
